                             LITERARY AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES                              

  The General Education Centre housed in the Kennedy Hall complex is the nucleus for most of the socio-cultural activities, organized in the University. The Centre organizes these activities through its various clubs, which were set up in 1960 as an integral part of General Education Centre with the objective to provide a base for healthy literary, social and cultural activities.  

 

 
 The general education centre is a nucleus for healthy literary, social and cultural activities. These clubs are, University Literary Club, A.M.U. Drama Club, Hindustani Music Club, Film Club and Fine Arts Club. Students are encouraged to participate in the activities in their leisure hours for their overall personality development. The University has been producing good speakers and debaters through its activities of the Literary Club. 

Aligarh has produced a number of theatre and film personalities, poets, writers, including Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, Ismat Chughtai, Rahi Masoom Raza, Shahid Lateef, Shakeel Badauni, Sahir Ludhianvi, Akhtarul Iman, Jaan Nisar Akhtar, Majaz, Ali Sardar Jafri, and Javed Akhtar.

Amongst film actors, Aligarh has produced Nasiruddin Shah, Rehman and Dilip Tahil. Film actresses from Aligarh include Neena, Begum Para, Kannar Devi, Nigar Sultana and Tabassum.

Noted Director Muzaffar Ali of Umrao Jaan fame is a product of Aligarh.  In the world of TV, Aligarians include Salahuddin Pervez and Khan Mohammad Ishtiaq. Poet Shahryar was, until recently, a professor in Urdu department of Aligarh Muslim University.  Rafiuddin Dagar and Ghazal singer late Talat Mahmood were also products of this institution.
