From its very inception, the University
has been a nursery of outstanding sportsmen and players,
and it has maintained this interest and tradition with
great fervour. | |

Cricket Club is the oldest one and was
established in 1878. Football,
Hockey, Tennis, Athletics, Riding, Badminton and
Swimming Clubs are also quite old. Clubs for Basket
Ball, Hiking and Mountaineering, Skating, Gymkhana etc.,
were established later on.Aligarh
is the only University in the country with a century old
Riding Club and the Riding squad, with 19 horses. The
Riding Club has won several All India prizes in
different |

competitions.
The
University Games Committee consists of 19 main clubs and
7 sub-clubs.
Aligarh has given the country some of the best
sportsmen.
Ghouse Mohammad, Khawaja Saeed Hai, Irshad
Ghouse, Adil Ghouse, Mohammad Tahir and Amir Alvi learnt
their Tennis at Aligarh. The |

University has also produced many
outstanding cricketers including Wazir Ali, Nazir Ali,
Lala Amar Nath, C.S.Naidu, Mushtaq Ali, Ali Hasan and
Mohammad Shahid.In
the field of Hockey, Aligarh has produced several
national stars including Mohammad Jafar Masood Minhas,
Ali Saeed, Inamur Rehman and Govinda played for India.
Abdul Qayyum, Anwar Ahmad Khan for Pakistan and
Doraswamy for Malaysia.

Zafar
Iqbal was India’s hockey captain in the mid 1980s. Guru Sewak
Singh, Joginder Singh and Aslam Sher Khan
were other distinguished players of Hockey. Karim Shelly,
Mahmood Khabbazi, Jamshed Nasiri, Majid Bashkar, Ahmad
Sanjari and Ali Khodai made a name in football while
Ranvir Singh, Mazhar Khan, Mohammad Ishtiaq and Sarohi
excelled as athletics.
The University has separate fields for
cricket, hockey, football, tennis and athletics; indoor
facilities like billiards, chess, carrom, table tennis,
and badminton are also available for boys and girls
students separately.
